U.S. SNOWBOARDING GRAND PRIX ~ Copper Mountain, Colorado on December 9th -12th, Mammoth, California on January 4th -10th and Park City, Utah on January 20th – 23rd, 2010

One of the most anticipated snowboarding competitions across the globe, the U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix is best known for its five Olympic qualification events that will lead up to the announcement of the 2010 Olympic halfpipe team. The tour will stop at three snow saturated West Coast cities; Copper Mountain in Colorado which is considered to be at the epicenter of snowboarding development, Mammoth in California known as a hotbed for growing a tremendous amount of talent and the final stop, Park City, Utah, where the 2010 Olympic halfpipe team will be named.

ULLR FEST ~ Breckenridge, Colorado ~ January 10th – 16th, 2010

A predominately local event, the Ullr Fest (pronounced Ooh-ler) is a wacky weeklong celebration in honor of the mythical Norse God of Snow, Ullr. Blanketed in the powdery white wonder, Breckenridge comes to life each January with: the Ullr Skating Party; a funny take on The Dating Game, Breck-Style; the colorful and chaotic Ullr Parade; a tasty Chili Cook Off Event and the annual Ullr Nordic Party and Bonfire. But the crown jewel of this festival is the hilarious Ullympics where teams compete in laugh-inducing events like the Turkey Toss, a funny form of bowling with frozen turkeys, and the Four-Man Ski Race that has participants using skis constructed out of two-by-six pieces of wood.

THAIPUSAM ~ Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia ~ January 30th, 2010

A religious festival where Hindus pay annual homage to Lord Muruga, Thaipusam attracts some 800,000 to the Batu Caves in the Gombak district for its important fête. Son of the Supreme God Shiva, Muruga is traditionally known for vanquishing the wicked demon Soorapadman, and Thaipusam is the celebration of this good vs. evil defeat. A common site is devotees who carry ‘kavadis’ which are ornate frames supported by metal spikes and hooks inserted into their bodies – without producing any blood. The ‘kavadis’ are then covered with cloth and decorated with feathers of peacock, representing the usual vehicle of Lord Murugan.

BOLLUDAGUR (BUNS DAY) ~ Reykjavik, Iceland ~ February 15th, 2010

A sweet Iceland Holiday, Bolludagur or Buns Day as it is better known, is particularly beloved by the children who get to wake their parents up early in anticipation of eating the nationally adored cream puffs. Colorfully decorated bread sticks called bolludagsvöndur are used by happy kiddos to “spank” their parents while in bed, garnering a bun for every successful whack. CARNAVAL de MAZATLÁN ~ Mazatlán, Mexico ~ February 11th – 15th, 2010

For over 100 years Mazatlάn has been celebrating its version of Mardis Gras attracting over 300,000 people annually. The festivities kick off with the burning of an effigy called Juan Carnaval who represents el mal humor, the bad mood, which is believed to lighten the spirits of those in need. This weeklong boisterous event goes strong day and night with dancing and singing amongst legions of confetti. CAPE VERDE MARDI GRAS ~ Cape Verde Islands, Africa ~ February 11th – 17th, 2010

At the small port town of Mindelo, nested in the northern part of the island of São Vicente, Cape Verde Mardi Gras joins in on the worldwide pre-Lent party season. IDITAROD ~ Iditarod, Alaska ~ March 6th, 2010

Known to many as “Last Great Race on Earth,” the Iditarod dogsled race held annually in Alaska covers over 1150 miles of intense, ice and snow covered mountainous terrain. WISTARIA VINE FESTIVAL ~ Sierra Madre, California ~ March 14th, 2010

Planted over a hundred years ago, the famous Chinese Lavender vine of Wistaria in Sierra Madre is the world’s largest flowering vine (listed in the Guinness World Book of Records) and even has its own festival for its annual aromatic bloom. Thousands of people flock to the picturesque town of Sierra Madre to see the deciduous plant’s massive and majestic blossoms that span for an entire acre and weigh about 250 tons. SONGKRAN FESTIVAL ~ Throughout Thailand ~ April 13th – 15th, 2010

The world’s biggest water fight erupts during Thailand’s traditional New Year that spans over three days of ritualistic events. The festivities kick off with a Public Spring Cleaning Day, supported by the religious belief that anything old and useless must be thrown away or it will bring bad luck to the owner. TAKAYAMA SPRING FESTIVAL ~ Takayama, Japan ~ April 14th – 15th, 2010

Dating back to the 16th century, the Takayama Festival is held twice a year, in spring and in fall. One of Japan’s most visually beautiful festivals due to its array of colors, Takayama marks the two times a year that a portable shrine called a mikoshi parades across town carrying the shrine’s kami (Shinto deity). BUN BANG FAI ROCKET FESTIVAL ~ Yasothon, Thailand ~ May 7th – 9th, 2010

Celebrated in Thailand’s northeast providence of Yasothon, this high-flying and explosive festival falls annually in May at the beginning of the rainy season. CHEUNG CHAU BUN FESTIVAL ~ Cheung Chau, China ~ May 18th – 22nd, 2010

Every year on the eighth day of the fourth moon, Cheung Chau, China celebrates its exciting Bun Festival. For three days leading up to the festival the entire island of Cheung Chau adheres to a strict vegetarian diet resulting in even the local McDonald’s replacing their beef burgers with mushroom patties. Then everyone’s focus turns to the impressive Bun Towers stacked 60-feet-high with traditional sticky buns where legions of people scramble up the towers to claim their ‘lucky’ buns while the crowd excitedly cheers on.

CORSA DEI CERI (The Race of the Candles) ~ Gubbio, Italy ~ May 15th, 2010

Dating way back to the 12th Century, Corsa dei Ceri or Race of the Candles is one of Italy’s most lively traditional festivals. Nearly unchanged since its origin; the local townspeople split into three groups that each carry a giant wooden Ceri (candle) weighing nearly half a ton and towering over 20 ft above them. Surrounded by the thousands of revelers who flock to the festival, they then race the Ceri across town to Basilica of St Ubaldo where the winner is determined by the skill of the candle bearer.

IL PALIO DI SIENA (Palio Horse Race) ~ Siena, Italy ~ July 2nd & August 6th, 2010

Twice a year in Siena, Italy, the locals and tourists gather for a spectacular 10 horse race around the Piazza del Campo which represents 10 of the 17 Contrade, or city wards. While the jockeys ride bareback, they must complete three laps in no more than 90 seconds. Preceding the race is the spirited Corteo Storico, a traditional procession of flag wavers dressed in medieval costumes that honors the Middle Ages when Siena was a free city.

PAMPLONA BULL RUN (Running of the Bulls) ~ Pamplona, Spain ~ July 7th – 14th, 2010

Witnessed around the world is the most popular event of the Fiesta of San Fermin, the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona which spans for an entire week in July. Each day a cannon is launched at 8am sharp signifying that the bulls have been let out. Then for the next three minutes thrill-seeking participants attempt to lead the six massive fighting bulls that run the route as well as two herds of bullocks to the bullring where they will later fight.

BASTILLE DAY ~ Paris and across France ~ July 14th, 2010

France's national holiday commemorates the storming of the Bastille, which was a prison during the reign of Louis XVI that started the French Revolution. During the awesome celebration in Paris, crowds line the Champs-Elysées for a majestic military parade led by the President and a spectacular air show by the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team (Red Arrows) and then explodes with exuberant fireworks as the crowd cheers, “Viva la France!”

BORYEONG MUD FESTIVAL ~ Boryeong, South Korea ~ July 17th – 25th, 2010

JUNKANOO ~ Chichicastenango, Nassau; New Providence Island, Bahamas ~ December 26th, 2010 & January 1st, 2011

Junkanoo is a uniquely Bahamian celebration that exists nowhere else in the world. It’s an incredibly energetic, colorful street parade made up of brightly costumed participants dancing or “rushing” to a sea of sounds, from drums and horns to cowbells and whistles. Traditionally taking place on both Boxing Day and New Years Day, some Bahamas providences even celebrate Junkanoo Summer as well. The crowds and floats of the parade are enhanced by spirited participants expressing themselves by stilt-dancing or even full fledge acrobats, all under the One Love motto.
